FRUITCAKE
Starring Mary McEvoy
Ballymaloe Grainstore
Sunday 23 November at 3pm
It’s a case of art imitating life as Mary McEvoy stars as a cookery school teacher in her one-woman show, Fruitcake, in Ballymaloe Grainstore on Sunday 23 November at 3pm.
Audiences are well-accustomed to seeing Darina and Rachel Allen offer culinary coaching, but this is a demo with a dramatic difference. Under the guise of a cookery demonstration Della Dolan, played with wonderful humour and compassion by Mary McEvoy (Biddy in Glenroe), shows us how to make ‘the perfect fruitcake’.
Along with the raisins, she mixes in memories of her life growing up on a farm in rural Ireland. She divulges a chequered past involving hardship, murder and intrigue but most of all great sacrifice, realisation and love.
Funny and poignant, this play will make you laugh and cry and remind you why life is ultimately exciting for all its ups and downs.
Written and directed by Alice Barry. Presented by Noggin Theatre Company.
Tickets for Fruitcake are €16 and may be booked online at www.ballymaloegrainstore.com or by phone on 021-465-1555.
