‘An extraordinarily rich and beautiful evocation of the genius of Yeats and of Ireland.’ –
James Flannery, Director, Yeats International Theatre Festival

Ballymaloe Grainstore presents In the Deep Heart’s Core, a ‘mystic cabaret’ that weaves together songs and spoken pieces from the poems and essays of W. B. Yeats in the 150th anniversary year of his birth. This musical biography of Yeat’s life takes place on Sunday 2 August at 8pm in Shanagarry, Co. Cork.

Yeat’s best-loved poems are set to stunning original musical by the American composer, singer, and guitarist, Joseph Sobol. Together with the singer and marvelous interpreter of Irish song, Kathy Cowan, they create a night of poetry, song, and storytelling that animates the poet’s dreams and heartbreaks toward ultimate spiritual triumph.

In the Deep Heart’s Core has toured the U.S. for twenty years, and embarks on its first Irish tour in honour of Yeat’s birth in 1865. The Chicago Sun Times calls it ‘A rapturous weave of the irresistible sounds of Irish music and the steely but lyrical magic that animates the words of one of Ireland’s most celebrated poets, W. B. Yeats.’

The show ran for eight months at Chicago’s Bailiwick Repertory Theatre to unanimous critical acclaim. It has received a Jeff Citation for Outstanding Original Music, was featured at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D. C., enjoyed a four-week run at Virginia’s nationally-known Barter Theatre, a four-week run at Philadelphia’s Movement Theatre International, in addition to an extensive national tour.

‘A joy – poetry to the ears, alternately tender and rousing.’ – Chicago Tribune
