The CIT Cork School of Music Opera Platform’s presentation of Figaro’s Delights went down a treat in July, so they are returning to Ballymaloe Grainstore on Sunday 1 October at 8pm to reprise the performance.
Emerging young singers will perform an enchanting evening of arias, duets and ensembles including scenes from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. At one hour long, it is a perfect introduction to opera.
The Marriage of Figaro is considered by many to be the greatest opera in history. Written in 1786 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart during the times of the French Revolution, the opera reflects the tension between royalty and the working class. The opera is set in Spain and takes place on the wedding day of Figaro and Susanna, servants to Count Almaviva. It contains one of the greatest scenes of forgiveness between the sexes that has ever been written.
Mary MacSweeney, director of the CIT Cork School of Music Opera Platform, has selected scenes that thread their way through this wonderful opera, making the performance an ideal introduction to opera for performers and audience alike. The talented group of singers has recently won eight prizes at the Cork Feis Maitiu competitions.
Figaro’s Delights is an opportunity to see emerging opera singers continuing their development, making the performance real, accessible and comprehensible. It promises fun for all. The running time is one hour without an interval.
