Take a walk with Áine through her batik paintings
“Siúlóidí” is an exhibition of batiks inspired by local walks around Crosshaven and surrounding areas by artist Áine Andrews. The exhibition will open in Cronin’s Pub, Crosshaven on 24 April and run until 4 June.
“Batik has long been a favourite of mine and my students as a Leaving Cert craft. Batik however takes time and time was something I was short of during my working years.” says the artist who retired from teaching at Gaelcholáiste Choilm Ballincollig in 2013. Since then, she has been working as a portrait artist specialising in images from old photographs and presented a popular exhibition in the City Hall in 2015
These days, she likes to take a break with a good walk, and this exhibition has been inspired by her wanderings around Drakes Pool, Templebreedy and the woods near her home in Crosshaven. “Unfortunately there is no sun on the walk along the old railway line in winter so my daily stroll took me instead up and around Crosshaven and into the trees with camera in hand.I have always loved the sculptural shapes of trees and the slanted light and views through the woodlands overlooking the houses and the village inspired another break and a return to making batiks” she explains.
The exhibition will run until 4 June in Cronin’s Pub in Crosshaven. The popular seaside pub is widely known for its lunch and dinner seafood offerings and is also included in the Michelin guide to eating out in pubs. Cronin’s host exhibitions of local artists on a regular basis and this summer they are planning a number of other cultural events including supper theatre evening with Hysterical Histories on 24 June.
